Fast and steady

Like other lenses in the Tamron G2 series, the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 has been equipped with dual micro-processor units that provide a notably speedier autofocus and even better performance with Tamron’s built-in image stabilizer system, VC (Vibration Reduction).

With the improved VC the image can be kept steady enough to allow for up to 4.5 stop longer shutter speed than one would normally need to avoid camera shake. Combined with the large aperture of this lens, f/2.8 at all focal lengths, it means the photographer can take razor sharp images in poor light conditions without the need for a tripod!

The Ultrasonic Silent Drive focus motor (USD) that powers the autofocus isn’t just fast and precise, but also very quiet. If you’re going to photograph wedding ceremonies, this is the lens to choose. Another valuable feature is the short minimum focus, only 28 cm throughout the focal range, which can be used to capture close-ups while also including the surroundings to make the images more interesting.

Sturdy design

The Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 is an extremely well-built lens made for professional use, with a robust and weather sealed barrel that protects the valuable optics and electronics on the inside. The fluorine coating on the outside of the front lens element has also been upgraded with a new formula that’s even more durable and better at resisting scratches, dirt, oil and fingerprints. It also makes the lens easier to wipe clean.

Optics without compromises

The advanced optical construction of the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 consists of 18 elements arranged in 13 groups.

A large glass molded aspherical element placed in the forward section plus another two aspherical elements in the rear are used to guarantee low distortion and exceptional sharpness across the frame at all apertures. Three elements made from LD glass (low dispersion) prevent chromatic aberrations and also contribute to the amazing resolution of this lens.

An Achilles heel for all wide-angle zoom lenses is the large convex front element that creates a sensitivity to stray light and reflections coming from sources at the edges of the picture. Because of this, the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 has a special coating, called AX (Anti-reflection eXpand), developed to minimize the impact of peripheral light. Together with Tamrons efficient and much appreciated eBand and BBAR coatings it assures the same high level of resistance to reflections, stray light and ghosting across all the surface.

Tap-in compatibel

Another important improvement to the predecessor is that the G2 lens is compatible with the Tamron Tap-in Console – a small accessory adapter that can be mounted on the bayonet and connected to a computer using a USB cable. Together with Tamron’s special software, you can fine-tune the autofocus and also perform future firmware updates.

And as an added bonus, Tamron has managed to include a rear filter-holder for gelatin sheet filters. But for technical reasons this applies only on the Canon version of the lens.
