State-of-the-art optical technology

Super fast auto focus with new SDM motor
The conventional PENTAX SDM ultrasound motors (pencil type) are small and therefore develop a rather low torque, which must be reinforced with additional gears. Because the heavy focus unit of the HD PENTAX-D FAx {2605} 85mm F1.4 ED SDM AW has more optical elements than other lenses, a larger ring-shaped auto focus motor with Supersonic Direct Drive (SDM) was specially developed for this lens. This generates a stronger torque, which corresponds approximately to 1.3 times the torque of the unit installed in the HD PENTAX-D FAx {2605} 50mm F1.4 SDM AW.

The new SDM ultrasonic ring motor thus ensures flawless, fast autofocus operation, which is a total of approx. 10x faster than with previously used SDM motors in PENTAX lenses.

Dustproof and weatherproof construction for carefree photography
